Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Jessica Gibson author of The Harder I Fall

Hi Jessica, thank you for agreeing to this interview. What are your ambitions for your writing career?

I think my ambitions are like most authors, I would love to be on the top 100 on Amazon, and NY Times Bestseller’s List. That would be like a dream. I really just want the write stories that people want to read.

Which writers inspire you?

There are so many. When I was younger, Nora Roberts was my idol, I devoured her books. Now, some of the amazing indie authors out there are doing some amazing things, and it’s so inspiring to see them hit it big.

So, what have you written?

I started out writing paranormal, I have a vampire series called the Blood Ties series, and a YA paranormal book called Haunted U. Then I switched gears and started writing contemporary romance and I have to say I love it. Dressed in White was my first contemporary romance, and now I have The Harder I Fall.

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

Becca is so focused, I wish I had some of her drive. She’s also so fragile, you just want to protect her from everything bad in the world.

What are you working on at the minute?

Right now I’m working on The Deeper We Get which is sort of a spin off from The Harder I Fall and features Becca’s brother Chad.

What’s it about?

It flashes forward 4 years from when The Harder I Fall left off and will show Chad finding who he is.

What genre are your books?

Contemporary Romance and Paranormal Romance

What draws you to this genre?

I love contemporary because the characters are so real, and it’s real life situations they are in. With paranormal, I just love the fantasy aspect of creating worlds and different beings.

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?

Haha, this is actually the first book where I did not have a set cast in my head. The characters were so real to me in my head that I just couldn’t cast them.

How much research do you do?

With this book I actually spoke with a working ballerina so I could get all the terms right. I like things to be as correct and true to life as possible.

Have you written any other novels in collaboration with other writers?

I haven’t, but I think it would be a lot of fun to do it!

When did you decide to become a writer?

In 2011 when my husband told me to get off my butt and actually do it lol.

Why do you write?

I write because the stories need to be told. I love the whole process of seeing the character’s and how they develop.

What is the hardest thing about writing?

The end of the book. I hate saying goodbye

What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?

The Harder I Fall was an emotional book to write, I got wrapped up in it a lot. I sobbed during some scenes.

What is the easiest thing about writing?

The storyline itself, it just sort of flowed out of me.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

2-5 months, depending on how much time I have.

Do you ever get writer’s Block?

All the time! Which is usually why I write in a few at a time so I can switch to one that is flowing.

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process?

I really do! The book cover will sell your book. A crappy one will cause it to fail.

How are you publishing this book and why?

Indie published, because I liked having the control.

Any amusing story about marketing books that happened to you?

Not as of yet, but I’m sure there will be some in the future.

What’s your views on social media for marketing?

Social media is so important! It’s really the only way we can get our names out there. If you put out a book and don’t do any marketing, you may as well have not put it out at all.

What is your favourite book and why?

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I love the history and the romance.

What is your favourite quote?

You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. -C. S. Lewis

What is your favourite movie and why?

Hmmmm, probably Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe or Kiss, Kiss Bang, Bang. I like them both because they are clever and funny.

Where can you see yourself in 5 years time?

Hopefully on top of the charts! I want to be writing still because I love it so much.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Keep going! Don’t quit. Also, hire a professional editor, and get someone to do an amazing cover for you.

Where do you see publishing going in the future?

I feel like print books will be a thing of the past. E-readers will be where all books will be.

Yes! But I found a way to help myself get over it. I listen to the most dominant characters

I don’t have one particular favourite book. I have a few. Most of Kristen Ashley’s books and The Blackstone Affair books.

Hi (Wendy), thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?

Thanks for having me.  I’m releasing my fourth Indie published book, Breaking Spades.  This is the fourth installment in my Hamden Series.  This book was a lot of fun to write.  I’m a lover of reading and true life romance.  You know the kind that involves realistic flaws and imperfections.  I love to lose myself in a story that I can easily picturing occurring.  I’ve always wanted to write and one day I decided to just “give it a go,” and well, here I am.  I live in New England with my husband and two small children.

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

CeCe and Jarod are both carrying scars.  One is trying to protect themselves the other is trying to right a wrong.  Put them together and you have a hot and sassy read.

What are you working on at the minute?

I’m venturing out of Hamden, Vermont and am writing the first installment in my next series.

What’s it about? 

About a small town sheriff that wants nothing to do with another woman after he was scorned, yet he can’t control the draw he has to the towns newest citizen.

What draws you to this genre?

Stories about adults, you know people that are above every night at the bar or the daily happenings on a college campus.

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?

I envision CeCe coming to life by the lovely Serinda Swan.  Jarod Gates has always been Tom Hardy to me.

How much research do you do?  I research portions that I want to keep accurate, but most of my books are my imagination or parts of my life that are just too good not to be shared.  Some of the best fiction isn’t fiction at all,

Have you written any other novels in collaboration with other writers? 

No but I would love to.

When did you decide to become a writer? 

I always wanted to write, yet I still have a hard time considering myself a writer.

Why do you write?

It’s a passion that I enjoy and people tell me I’m good at it, so why not?

What made you decide to sit down and actually start something?

My daughters desire not to sleep for the first couple of years.  She just liked to be awake, I needed something to do.

What is the hardest thing about writing?

Creating a story that someone would want to read.

What is the easiest thing about writing? Envisioning the characters.  Especially when I’m watching television, “Oh he would make a good character.  I see him as…”

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

Four months

Do you ever get writer’s Block?

Yes and it isn’t a pretty sight.

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?

Talk it out with people.  Why are you stuck?  Where is the story, where do you want it to go?  How do you want it to end?

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process?

Yes.  I released Three of Hearts and Three of Spades with what I wanted the covers to be.  Needless to say they didn’t get much notice.  Then I decided to rerelease them with hotter covers and dang, people were really excited about it.  We are creatures of habit.  You wouldn’t want to see a movie that doesn’t look entertaining right?  So why would you want to buy a book that didn’t grab you either? 

How are you publishing this book and why?

Indie, it is a fabulous community and there are always people willing to help. Don’t get me wrong, I think it would be fabulous to get signed by a big name publisher but being Indie, I make the rules, so that definitely has its perks.

 

What’s your views on social media for marketing?

I couldn’t sell a book without it

What is your favourite book and why?

Oh this is a tough one, but I will go with Lori Foster’s Too Much Temptation.  It was the first book that I read that dealt with a heroine with self-image problems.  You know big girls need love too.

What is your favourite quote?

Too many to say but one of my favorites is, “Over me? To be over me, babe, you'd have to have been under me. And if you'd ever been under me, there'd be no getting over me." ~ Adrian from Everything I’ve Never Had by Lynetta Halat.  I mean Dang!

What is your favourite film and why?

Love Actually, because Love really is all around us.

Where can you see yourself in 5 years time?

Happy that I didn’t let my fear hold me back, other than that who knows.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Go for it.  Even the most proclaimed and established authors aren’t liked by everyone.  If someone doesn’t like you story, it doesn’t mean someone else won’t.

I’m Trista, I’m from Hamilton, Ohio but currently live in Anchorage, Alaska. I am a military spouse, mother of two and mother to two rescued pups.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

I would love to see best seller status. Just seeing it on the cover of my books…I would feel so accomplished. A best seller is the product of amazing writing and hard work. I couldn’t get any more accomplished than that.

Madeleine Wickham/Sophie Kinsella, Janet Evanovich, Meg Cabot, Stephen King, J.K Rowling just to name a few.

How much research do you do?

Probably way too much, haha. I spend 75% of the researching and interviewing just to learn.

When did you decide to become a writer?

I’m pretty sure I was about 5 years old. Once I picked up a pen and some paper and started writing, I just couldn’t stop. Haha. Though I never took it seriously until I was in high school and really thought through the possibilities of making it a career. Even then it was still years down the road for me.

Why do you write?

It’s a release for me. I put a little of myself in all of the characters and release my emotions. For me, it’s not just a hobby, it’s a passion, it’s a way of living.

What made you decide to sit down and actually start something?

It was my senior year in high school and I was supposed to write a short story. That short story, at the encouragement of my teacher, because a 6 book series.

What is the hardest thing about writing?

Writer’s block and when characters just won’t cooperate with me. They have a mind of their own, I tell you! ;)

What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?

Eric,  my bad boy biker…that man does have a mind of his own and has gone and entire different direction than what I had planned for him. Haha. It’s flowing, but he took a turn on me.

What is the easiest thing about writing?

Once I get to know a character and how they flow on paper…the writing just pours out of me. I’ll sit down and knock out 10,000 words and will only stop to sleep (I am a night owl).

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

As long as it flows I can write it in about 4 months. Then comes revising and editing and fine tuning.

Do you ever get writer’s Block?

Oh yeah, when a character wants to go off my plot outline and I have no idea where to take it, I’ll get the dreaded writer’s block. That’s when I have to sit, re-read everything I have from start to finish and feel my characters out more.

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?

I love to re-read and re-read and re-read some more. It puts me in the book, especially working so late at night when it’s quiet, and I feel out my characters and story.

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process?

Now I do. I used to think that covers didn’t matter and before mine were pretty plain. Having revamped them and relaunching them, it’s surprising at how many people take notice to the covers. I know the old saying “never judge a book by it’s cover,” but people still do.

How are you publishing this book and why?

I’m currently with a new Indie publisher and will publish with them.

Any amusing story about marketing books that happened to you?

Not so far, but I’m sure this year will have lots, haha.

What’s your views on social media for marketing?

I use social media like crazy to market and think it’s one of the best ways to easily spread your name and your work.

What is your favourite book and why?

Christine by Stephen King if I have to pick one. An old, possessed car? LOVE IT!

What is your favourite quote?

“Keep moving forward.” Because it’s true…just keep moving forward.

What is your favourite film and why?

The Goonies. I have loved it since I was a kid and it has so many childhood memories for me. I’m a little ticked so many of the old scenes were hacked out! (I.e. the octopus, ect)

Where can you see yourself in 5 years time?

I would love to be a best seller with at least 15 more books out. Since my Believe series is so huge (so far 20 books) the number of books should be no problem at all. It’s the best selling part  that’s being very optimistic.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Never let anyone make you drop your pen. Keep writing. Take bad reviews with a grain of salt. Keep moving forward =)

Where do you see publishing going in the future?

Maybe one day I’ll go the traditional route. Who knows. Time will tell =)

Hi M.S., thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?

A little bit about me…well, I was born and raised in Iowa where I still reside today with my husband and 5 year old son. I enjoy writing, reading and spending time with my friends and family.

What are your ambitions for your writing career? 

My ambitions are pretty modest. Of course, I’d love to have a huge career with movie deals and the whole nine yards, but I need to be realist. Honestly, I’d love to be able to support my family full time with my writing and not have to worry about working my normal 9-5 job during the week.

Which writers inspire you? 

For me, inspiration comes from many different places. Such as music, television programs, movies and current events. However, in the writing realm, I immediately fell in the with Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind. It’s such a moving piece of work that captured the time with such clarity and intensity. Currently, I love anything Jessica Sorensen, Jamie McGuire, J.A. Redmerski and Colleen Hoover write. I find those ladies inspirational not only with their words, but in their career as well.

So, what have you written? 

Published are the first three books of the Sulfur Heights Series: Scarred Love, Tragic Love, and Blind Love.  The popularity of Scarred Love became an Amazon Best Seller and I soon hope the others will fall in its path. I have written another full length novel, not associated with the Sulfur Heights Series; I will work on publishing it when I have more time.

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

The story is told a duel point of view. 

Jake Evans is an absolute delight in a crude bad boy type of way. He was born in raised in a community (Sulfur Heights) where drugs, crime, and violence lurk around every corner. Until the age of ten he was raised by his drug-addicted mother and absentee father. After his mother’s death, Jake and the rest of his brothers were

raised by their eldest brother, Reggie. Fast forward to adulthood, Jake’s lifestyle became fast. He survived on the rush of hustling, fighting, and womanizing.  He thought everything in his life was perfect until he met Delilah and she showed him exactly what he was missing from life.

Delilah St. James is the exact opposite of Jake. She was born into a wealthy southern family and was expected to be perfect in every fashion of her life. Although she was raised a certain way, Delilah was kind and befriended anyone who’d give her a chance. When she moved to Sulfur Heights for a school internship, she soon realizes that life isn’t always wonderful and can be quite cruel. It took Jake to open her eyes and see what kind of life she was leading, wasn’t really a life at all.

What are you working on at the minute?

Book #4 in the Sulfur Heights Series, Surviving Love as well as book #5, Redeemed Love.

What’s it about? (*if relevant) 

Book #4 is the continuation of Tragic Love, told in Drake’s POV. Each book in the series are told in a different characters POV, however, the story plays off and builds from the book released prior in the series. Redeemed Love is the final installment in the Sulfur Heights Series and will be told in Jeremy’s POV. That’s about all I can share right now ;)

What draws you to this genre?

The stories are raw and as real as you can get to life. Well, the stories I tend to read.

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book? 

This is a tough question.  Off the top of my head I could see Alex Pettyfer playing Jake Evans and Amanda Seyfried as Delilah St. James.

How much research do you do? 

For Blind Love there was no need for research. I was pretty comfortable with the material.

Have you written any other novels in collaboration with other writers? 

I worked on some stuff with my sister, but nothing that’s been published.

When did you decide to become a writer?

About two years ago. I was having a bad day and my sister and I were having a rather interesting conversation. Next thing I know, she suggested writing a book and a very bright light bulb went off. That very night I sat down and started working on my first novel and soon after that I started writing Scarred Love.

Why do you write?

Because I love it and I couldn’t imagine never doing it. I find writing very therapeutic and the perfect way to escape reality.  Growing up, I never knew what to do with all the stories I’d create in my head or really had a good excuse to people for hours at a time.  Now, I know exactly what to do with them and I love it.

What made you decide to sit down and actually start something?

When my sister just blatantly told me I need to write a novel and she ignited a passion I never knew existed.

What is the hardest thing about writing?

Currently, it’s time. I still work a full time job at an insurance company and I have a young son I care for. So I can only write when I’m home and my house is quiet. Basically that equates to late at night or early in the morning.

What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?

The story was there, just ready to ooze out of me, but like I said earlier I was struggling with time. There never seems to be enough time in the day.

What is the easiest thing about writing? 

Escaping into the story is the easiest thing for me when I write. I immerse myself totally into my characters and story. Once I’m in my writing zone, the words just fall out creating a story.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

Working on a book part time, I can finish the initial rough draft in two to three months.

Do you ever get writer’s Block?

Fortunately, I haven’t experienced writers block too bad.

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block? 

Whenever I get stuck, I will walk away from my computer for a day and clear my head. If that doesn’t work I will run down the story with a friend or my sister to get the kinks worked out.

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process?

Yes I do. The cover and the blurb are crucial when buyers select the book. Many times they will read the blurb, reviews, and look at the cover over reading the sample provided on the retail sites.

How are you publishing this book and why? 

I am an Indie author. I am working on getting an agent and hopefully traditional publishing will be in my future.

Any amusing story about marketing books that happened to you?

I don’t have any funny stories. All I can say is, in 8 months time it’s been a major learning experience of what works and what doesn’t.

What’s your views on social media for marketing?

Social media is a very important step to get your book out to the public, especially blog sites.  Indie authors are held at the mercy of bloggers and social media marketing. If a blog site loves your book, they will talk about it and promote your work for free. This can easily spread to other bloggers and before you know it everyone’s talking about you. Unfortunately, the same goes if they are not fans of your work.

What is your favourite book and why?

Gone with the Wind is my favorite book. It’s a classic story of survival and entwined with love and devotion to one’s desired to succeed.

What is your favourite quote?

“If I have to steal or kill—as God is my witness, I’m never going to be hungry again.”

What is your favourite film and why?

Gone with the Wind, it’s a timeless classic and reflects the book well especially for the time the movie was made in the 1930’s. I also love The Godfather, Warrior, When Harry Met Sally and anything Will Farrell stars in.

Where can you see yourself in 5 years time?

I can see myself in my cave writing away on a fulltime basis. Hopefully with a publishing deal and a lot more fans of my work.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Do lots of research when you first get into the publishing portion. Network, network, network and if you need help, find someone to help you. I would be lost without my PA. She’s done so much for me and getting my name out there.  She’s irreplaceable.

Where do you see publishing going in the future?

I only hope the industry gets a handle on piracy sites and Amazon modifies their return policy on eBooks.  Currently, you have three days to return an eBook on Amazon and many customers are reading the book in a couple of days then returning it. Personally, I think this is stealing. No other retail site has such a long return policy and it makes it that much easier for your books to get pirated.
